This tagline isn't exactly meaningless, but it certainly is disturbing.

"Panama - It will never leave you."

I burst into giggles when I spotted this advertisement on the subway, early one morning on my way to work. Maybe I've lived in this dirty city too long - all I could think of was bad things that you might pick up on a visit to a foreign locale. Things you might wish would leave you.

Great post! I would say that most slogans do nothing to promote their difference. Walmart went from a great tag line, Always Low Prices. Always to Save Money, Live Better. What a shame. If you have a great tag line like Walmart had, leave it alone.

Here's a great little quiz that illustrates your point to perfection.

“Our Team. Our Tradition.” – Carolina Hurricanes

“Spirit is Everything” – Toronto Maple Leafs

To get into the worst of the worst you have to check out major league sports. How can organizations with so much cash consistently suck at marketing?

Yeah, Technically Beautiful is a true modern classic. But I'd categorize it as just "tin-eared-awful" as opposed to meaningless.

Speaking of the big smoke, Tourism Toronto currently uses the tag "We've been waiting for you."

Incredibly generic, and in my opinion, also quite creepy. I keep thinking "What? How did you know?"

On the website still, and I even saw a bus shelter ad the other day!

Amusing article, thanks.

I recall a number of years ago Ottawa paid hundreds of thousands to create a tagline for the city's new marketing slogan – "Ottawa: technically beautiful."
It was intended to highlight Ottawa as both a technology centre and a tourism destination. It was widely panned and buried quickly for obvious reasons.

Toronto proceed to spend millions coming up with "Toronto Unlimited" as part of the most lame branding program ever created...

Thanks Nancy!

And great post yourself - eerily similar. My favourite: "Powering tomorrow. (You want power today? Good luck!)"

Wow, that one is pretty extreme.

Reminds me of the Listerine campaign in the '30s that coined the phrase "Always a bridesmaid, never a bride." Ads featured a lonely woman who could not get a man - because of her bad breath! Amazing what the Mad Men could get away with.
