I'm not a branding expert but regardless of the "generic nature" of corn flakes, does not Kelloggs effectively own the term in the minds of consumers? (We'll skip the legal aspects). Is that not branding? When I think of corn flakes I think of Kelloggs. When I look at a box of cereal "claiming to be corn flakes" I immediately compare it to Kelloggs. By example, as soon as I saw the organic corn flakes box picture, I was making mental comparisons between their round smooth flakes and "regular corn flakes", aka Kelloggs. It just happens automatically. Some food for thought (and yes, the pun was intended).
