Good point Judy! If the play was garbage, would Malcolm still feel that his words were "part of some grander cause".

So plagiarism is only plagiarism when the copied material is "part of some crappier cause". Would Malcolm feel the same way, for example, if I used some of his work verbatim in my upcoming Polka-genre musical single, which is guaranteed to be terrible?

There's some truth to these observations by yourself and Gladwell about plagiarism and ideas becoming part of the ether. However, had Lavery's play not been so outstanding in Gladwell's view, I doubt he would have rethought and retracted his initial objections. Plagiarism is most damaging to those lacking the prominence to be heard.
